Questions about the data
Short answers. The full licence and privacy terms are linked at the foot of the page.
Where does the data come from?
From each city's own open-data portal, published under that city's open licence. We load it every week (permits) or month (everything else), match each permit to its address or parcel, and record the licence text and date at every load.
Is this an official city record?
No. Permit Gopher is not a municipal service and no city endorses it. For a legal or official answer, ask the city.
Why are there no owner names?
The cities don't publish them, and we don't add them from anywhere else. Individual permit applicants are withheld too; company names appear as the city supplies them.
Why no sold prices?
Sold prices come from land titles and MLS, not municipal open data. Where a city publishes it, we show the assessed value, which is an estimate for property tax.
Why do some permits have no contractor or value?
Some cities don't publish those fields; Edmonton, for one, publishes values but no contractor names. We show what each city releases and say so where a field is missing.
Can I email the contractors in the feed?
The feed is not a consent list. Canada's anti-spam law (CASL) applies to any commercial email you send, and you are responsible for it. We never include phone numbers or emails.
Can I resell or build on the data?
With a data licence, yes, as long as each city's attribution sentence travels with it. Feed and report subscriptions are for your own business use.
Where is my account information stored?
On our servers in Canada. Card payments are handled by Stripe, so we never see or store card numbers. The privacy policy lists every service provider and where it stores data.
